Hans Andreae Hammerflügel (period instrument -- see below) performs the first movement (part 1) of the Mozart Coronation concerto K. 537. This recording originally was produced by Amadeo (AMADEO OEsterreichische Schallplatten Ges.mbH Vienna) and redistributed by the Musical Heritage Society in 1966 (MHS 701). Hans Andreae (an image of whom I was unable to obtain) is the son of the famous Swiss conductor and composer Volkmar Andreae (1879-1962). In this recording Wolfgang von Karajan (1906-1987 brother of Herbert von Karajan) conducts the Camerata Academica Salzburg. To read a 1963 Time magazine article about Wolfgang von Karajan please click here: www.time.com According to the program notes on the rear cover of the LP jacket: "This recording attempts an approximation to the way the music originally sounded. The strings are reduced to the proportions usual in the 18th century and the solo part is played in a Hammerflügel or early piano. The delicate yet solid tone of the Hammerflügel is undoubtedly better suited to the transparency of this music than the far too massive sound of the modern piano. Above all it preserves the basic conception of the works: an equal partnership of soloist and orchestra that is seriously unbalanced by the piano of today."
